Houston Texans feeling good about where they’re at

ASSOCIATED PRESS

HOUSTON — Texans nose tackle Shaun Cody is known around the locker room for his sense of humor. He’s the star of comical video skits on the team’s website, and he grabbed a microphone and serenaded Arian Foster as he was being interviewed last week.

Cody was joking again after Sunday’s 30-12 win over Cleveland when he said, “Super Bowl, here we come.”

That might not be too much of a stretch.

The first-place Texans (6-3) have won three in a row to move three games over .500 for the first time, heading into Sunday’s game at Tampa Bay (4-4). And with each victory, there seems to be more reasons to believe Houston will continue to roll.

Houston has held its last three opponents under 200 yards and now leads the league in total defense (274 per game). More remarkably, the Texans rank second against the pass (182.6 yards per game) after finishing last in 2010.

The players and coach Gary Kubiak credit Wade Phillips for the defensive resurgence. The new coordinator re-energized the unit during a transition to a 3-4 alignment, and Kubiak found out Monday that his team now boasts the league’s top defense.

“We’ve come a long way,” Kubiak said. “Hopefully, there’s a lot more good things to come.”

The offense, meanwhile, has relied on Foster and Ben Tate to overcome the absence of star receiver Andre Johnson, who’s missed five games with a right hamstring injury. Foster and Tate both rushed for over 100 yards in Sunday’s rout of Cleveland, the second time in three weeks the duo has done that in the same game.

The Texans rank second in rushing (155 yards per game) and are the only team with two backs inside the league’s top 10. Foster had 19 carries for 124 yards and Tate had 12 rushes for 115 on Sunday.

With solid kicking against the Browns, Kubiak is seeing the versatility he envisioned when he took over the team in 2006.

“I tell you guys all the time, (the goal) is hopefully get a team that’s good enough when you show up on Sunday that you can win three different ways,” Kubiak said. “Right now, I think we’re heading very much towards that.”

What are your opinions.

Arian Foster, Ben Tate Fantasy Recap: Houston…

Read More: Arian Foster (RB – HOU), Ben Tate (RB – HOU), Houston Texans

The Houston Texans rushing attack is built around stud running back Arian Foster. He leads the way and has turned into an all-pro running back for the Texans. However, the Texans have shown a willingness to work backup running back Ben Tate into the mix when things are getting out of hand in a game. For the second time in three games, the Houston Texans took advantage of a big lead and got dual 100-yard rushing performances from Arian Foster and Ben Tate. The two backs combined for 239 yards and two touchdowns in the easy victory.

Ben Tate remains a bench player for now given how hard it is to predict these kinds of situations. The Texans have a few games remaining on their schedule that could result in blowouts, but it can be a bit of a roll of the dice. The “any given Sunday” mantra of upsets makes it a risky proposition to play Tate while Foster is healthy. If you want to roll the dice go ahead, but it is arguably a sucker bet to do so.

NFL: Houston Texans rout Browns for third straight…

The Houston Texans are feeling good about themselves after another commanding win without star receiver Andre Johnson.

Arian Foster rushed for 124 yards, Ben Tate ran for 115 and both scored touchdowns in leading Houston past Cleveland.

“We felt like going into this game, that this is a game we should dominate,” tackle Eric Winston said. “I feel like we did. We’re finding our groove.”

The Texans (6-3) finished with a franchise-record 261 yards rushing and had a pair of 100-yard rushers for the second time in three games. They moved three games over .500 for the first time, and have now won three in a row without Johnson, who’s missed five games with a right hamstring injury.

Houston limited the Browns (3-5) to 10 first downs and 172 yards, the third straight game they have held their opponent under 200 yards.

The Texans scored on their opening series for the sixth time this season when Tate scored on a 27-yard run.

Andre Johnson Injury Update: Gary Kubiak Believes…

Read More: nfl injury report, houston texans injury report, andre johnson injury, Owen Daniels (TE – HOU), Andre Johnson (WR – HOU), Kevin Walter (WR – HOU), Jacoby Jones (WR – HOU), Arian Foster (RB – HOU), Houston Texans

The Houston Texans wrapped up their Thursday practice and are getting some encouraging news from wide receiver Andre Johnson. According to head coach Gary Kubiak, Johnson felt better on Thursday and will still probably be a game-time decision Sunday against the Cleveland Browns.

Andre Johnson has been recovering from surgery on a hamstring injury and is still in the recovery window for the procedure. My guess is Johnson does not play this Sunday, but the good news is the Texans play an early game on Sunday. You will not find yourself rolling the dice on a 4:05pm ET start.

In the weeks since Andre Johnson went down with the hamstring injury, the Texans have had a mix of players step up in the receiving game. Since losing Johnson, Owen Daniels, Arian Foster, Jacoby Jones and Kevin Walter have all led the Texans in receiving at some point. Of the players on the fantasy football waiver wire, Walter and Jones are solid options. Walter is probably the safer of the two, while Jones has a bit more upside.

Houston Texans take down Jacksonville Jaguars

Reuters

4:25 p.m. EDT, October 30, 2011

Recap: Texans 24, Jaguars 14

Matt Schaub threw a touchdown pass and ran for another as the Houston Texans held the visiting Jacksonville Jaguars to 160 yards of offense en route to a 24-14 win on Sunday.

Tight end Joel Dreessen caught a 7-yard touchdown in the third quarter to break a 7-7 tie and Arian Foster added a 4-yard score in the fourth for the Texans (5-3), who remained a half-game ahead of the Titans in the AFC South.

Foster had a combined 234 yards in Houston’s 41-7 victory at Tennessee last week, but only 124 on Sunday – 112 on the ground – for his fifth straight game with 100 yards or more from scrimmage.

Jacksonville’s Maurice Jones-Drew, who entered the game second in the NFL with 677 yards rushing, was held to 63 and a touchdown as the Jaguars (2-6) fell to 2-7 in their last nine games at Houston.

The Texans took a 7-0 lead on Schaub’s 2-yard run in the first quarter.

Jacksonville answered when Jason Hill caught his third touchdown pass in four games, a 5-yarder from rookie Blaine Gabbert in the second quarter.

The score was set up when the Jaguars’ Clint Session sacked Schaub at the Houston 35 and forced a fumble, which was returned 22 yards and wound up back in Session’s hands after two laterals.

Gabbert left the game for one series in the first quarter with a rib injury, but returned. He finished 10 of 30 for 97 yards with two interceptions and has completed only 45.6 percent of his passes this season.

Schaub was 16 of 30 for 225 yards.

NFL: Houston Texans beat Tennessee Titans to take…

The Houston Texans gave themselves a big confidence boost and the AFC South lead at the same time.

Arian Foster ran for 115 yards and two touchdowns and added 119 more receiving with a 78-yard TD as the Texans routed the Titans to take back the division lead from Tennessee. He became the first Texan with 100 yards rushing and receiving in the same game.

Houston (4-3) outgained the Titans (3-3) 518-148 and had the ball for more than 37 minutes. Ben Tate ran for 104 yards, marking the first time the Texans have had two backs top 100 yards in the same game in their short history.

“It’s hard to run on the road, and it was a very big game,” Texans coach Gary Kubiak said. “We get a chance to win like that and to grasp it and play the way we played in the second half is what made me feel good.”

The Texans picked off two passes with Brice McCain returning the second 38 yards for a TD, and had two sacks.

NFL Picks And Predictions Week 6: Texans Vs….

Oct 14, 2011 – The Houston Texans and Baltimore Ravens looked like it would be a pretty evenly matched game just a couple of weeks ago, but fast forward to Sunday and one will see that the Texans will be missing two of their best players in Andre Johnson and Mario Williams. Knowing that, it would seem to make sense that the Week 6 NFL picks and predictions will probably favor the hosting Ravens.

First up on the stroll through this week’s NFL expert picks is SB Nation’s own Andrew Sharp. Sharp went 7-6 against the spread last week, but who really counts picks against the spread when you play to win the game.

Houston at Baltimore (-8.5) … Baltimore’s my early favorite to win the AFC, but the Texans are too good to be getting 8.5 points on the road. Right? It just… It’s really scary to bet on Kubiak-coached team.

The experts at CBS Sports were unanimous in selecting the Ravens to win outright, but Will Brinson and Dave Richard both chose the Texans when factoring in the spread. Over at ESPN, the Ravens were the unanimous pick as well and Sports Illustrated’s Peter King believes the Texans will lose, too.

With the injuries, it’s easy to see why the Ravens are the pick of the experts this week, but one never knows when Arian Foster, or his counterpart in Ray Rice, might make things interesting.

Leach expects ‘fun and weird’ reunion vs Houston

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP)—Baltimore Ravens fullback Vonta Leach(notes) can seem to
get a handle on the way he’s supposed to feel about facing his former teammates
on the Houston Texans.

Leach spent five years in Houston before signing in August with Baltimore as
a free agent. On Sunday, when the Ravens host the Texans, Leach will go up
against several players with whom he forged tight friendships.

Leach says the reunion will probably be “fun and weird.” But he adds, “I
want to win, and when the game starts, it’s on.”

In Houston last year, Leach helped Arian Foster(notes) amass an NFL-high 1,616
yards rushing. Leach now is opening holes for Ray Rice(notes), who did everything but
throw a party when Baltimore signed the 6-foot, 260-pound wrecking ball.

Texans lose Andre Johnson, beat Steelers, 17-10

HOUSTON—Andre Johnson went down, so the Houston Texans turned to their other offensive star to beat the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Arian Foster rushed for 155 yards Sunday, including the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter of the Texans’ 17-10 win.

Johnson, Houston’s All-Pro receiver, left in the second quarter with a right hamstring injury and did not return to the game, though he was back on the sideline late to watch Houston (3-1) finish off Ben Roethlisberger and the injury-plagued Steelers (2-2).

Big Ben was beat up all day, sacked five times behind an offensive line missing two regular starters. The Steelers also lost running back Rashard Mendenhall (hamstring), linebacker James Harrison (eye) and defensive end Aaron Smith (foot) during the game.

Roethlisberger hurt his left foot but stayed in, and he was wearing a walking boot when he left the stadium. He said he was injured on the second-to-last series when he was tackled from behind. Roethlisberger had an X-ray after the game but said he didn’t know the results.

Foster, meanwhile, finally looked healthy after weeks of nursing a left hamstring strain. He broke a 42-yard touchdown run with about 12 minutes left after the Steelers rallied to tie it at 10-all. Foster finished with 30 carries.

“He stepped up for his team today,” Houston coach Gary Kubiak said.

Matt Schaub threw a touchdown pass to Owen Daniels in the first half. The Texans led 10-0 at the break, and an ill-timed penalty cost them another touchdown.

On the final snap before the half, Danieal Manning blocked Shaun Suisham’s field-goal attempt, and Johnathan Joseph scooped up the loose ball and ran 61 yards to the end zone. But Manning was flagged for an illegal block well behind Joseph, and the score was nullified.

Houston was on the move in the second quarter when Johnson pulled up without getting touched.

The five-time Pro Bowl receiver caught a pass, turned upfield and

then fell forward near the 40-yard line, immediately clutching the back of his right leg. He limped off and walked to the locker room on his own.

The Texans seemed to lose their edge after that. The drive stalled and Neil Rackers kicked a 22-yard field goal for a 10-0 lead. Rackers improved to 10-for-10 this season.

Schaub threw a 30-yard pass to Daniels to the Steelers 42 early in the fourth. Foster took it from there, breaking outside and outrunning the Pittsburgh secondary to the end zone.

Johnson was back on the sideline for the final 10 minutes and he watched Houston’s defense finish it off.

Antonio Smith and Mario Williams sacked Roethlisberger, and linebacker Connor Barwin swatted away Big Ben’s fourth-down pass with 2:38 left.

The Steelers had one last gasp after Houston had another touchdown wiped away by a penalty. Joseph intercepted Roethlisberger’s pass from the end zone and returned it for a score, but rookie J.J. Watt was flagged for roughing the passer.

The Texans got an interception that counted by Jason Allen to end the drive and clinch the win.

Another Houston penalty in the first half wiped out a sack and forced fumble by Barwin.

The Texans dominated the first half, with Foster setting the tone on the first drive.

The 2010 NFL rushing champion ran over, around and through the Steelers’ defense, gaining 41 yards in all. He had a pair of 5-yard runs to the Pittsburgh 1, and with the Steelers keying on him, Daniels was open and Schaub found him for an easy touchdown.

The score finished a 19-play drive that consumed 10 minutes, 55 seconds, both franchise records.

Williams sacked Roethlisberger on the fourth play of the second half. But Pittsburgh’s line starting holding up better, and Roethlisberger threw a 23-yard pass to Antonio Brown to the Houston 15. Mendenhall scored on a 3-yard run, his last play before leaving with the injury.

Backup Isaac Redman broke an 18-yard run across midfield to start the Steelers’ next series. Pittsburgh chewed up the last five minutes of the third quarter with the drive, and Suisham tied it with a 26-yard field goal.

Steelers Vs. Texans: Facts And Figures For…

Read More: Troy Polamalu (SS – PIT), J.J. Watt (DE – HOU), Pittsburgh Steelers, New Orleans Saints, Houston Texans

Once the final whistle is blown on Sunday in the Pittsburgh Steelers and Houston Texans’ Week 4 matchup at Reliant Energy Stadium in Houston, one team will be 3-1 and feeling pretty good about having just defeated a worthy opponent. The other will be 2-2 at the quarter pole of the 2011 season and left with answers about how good they really are. The last time the two teams met was Week 1 of the 2008 season. Houston’s roster looks much different today than it did then, whereas Pittsburgh has quite a few holdovers from their championship season in ’08. Consequently, it’s hard to draw too much from the Steelers 38-7 thumping of the Texans over three years ago. Hopefully though the result will be similarly positive for Pittsburgh come Sunday late afternoon.

While we wait to see if the Steelers can clean up some of the mistakes that plagued them during their sloppy Week 3 win over Indianapolis, here are a few facts and figures for both squads heading into Week 4.

STEELERS:

Arian Foster Injury Update: Expects Sizable Load,…

Read More: nfl injury report, texans injury report, arian foster injury, arian foster hamstring, Arian Foster (RB – HOU), Ben Tate (RB – HOU), Houston Texans

Houston Texans head coach Gary Kubiak told the media Friday that running back Arian Foster “looks good…We’re going to put him back to work full-time and see how he holds up.” This comes two days after Kubiak had mentioned that the team would need to work Foster back to his full-time load. Gary Kubiak is most definitely following in the foot steps of his mentor Mike Shanahan when it comes to providing conflicting signals about his running backs.

As it currently stands, Ben Tate is likely going to be looking at a decent number of carries given his strong performances in place of Foster. The question is how much he takes away from Foster this week. At this point I think you have to stick with Arian Foster in spite of the conflicting signals. He faces a nice little matchup against a struggling Steelers squad and I’ve got to think he gets a vast majority of the touches. I find myself over-thinking the situation and that always leads to trouble.

Ben Tate on the other hand heads back to your bench as a simple hand-cuff to Foster. He retains season-long value given Foster’s hamstring, but he is not a guy you are starting at this point.

Arian Foster Injury Update: Expected To Start, But…

Read More: nfl injury report, texans injury report, arian foster injury, Arian Foster (RB – HOU), Ben Tate (RB – HOU), Houston Texans

Houston Texans running back Arian Foster was in fact a full participant in practice Wednesday and as previously referenced, is expected to start Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The one question mark that remains is exactly how many carries Foster will get on Sunday. Foster has been battling back from a hamstring injury and they can easily be aggravated. Thus it makes sense for Texans to take their time working him back into a full work load.

So should that impact your decision whether to start Foster this weekend? I’d say no because part of Gary Kubiak’s comments could be to play some mind games with Mike Tomlin and the Steelers. As a Mike Shanahan disciple, it wouldn’t be surprising for Kubiak to hold back complete information in regards to Foster.

I think if Foster gets off to a solid start he’ll get the bulk of the load. At the same time, if Ben Tate is not slowed by his Sunday ankle injury, he’s done enough to earn additional work even with Foster back. I could very well see a 2/3, 1/3 split of carries on Sunday.

Steve Slaton Claimed By Miami Dolphins After…

The Houston Texans are releasing RB Steve Slaton and promoting RB Chris Ogbonnaya from the practice squad, according to NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora.

Slaton was originally the Texans third round pick in the 2008 NFL draft and was immediately placed as the feature back in Houston. He had a solid rookie season gaining over 1,282 yards rushing and 377 yards passing along with 10 total touchdowns.

His feature back status didn’t continue into 2009, nor in 2010, when the team acquired RB Arian Foster, who became the main running back. Foster is now battling injuries yet the Texans chose to elevate RB Ben Tate to receiving a bulk of the carries.

Slaton was rumored to be cut or traded prior to the final roster cut down but ultimately remained on the Texans roster. In the 2011 season, Slaton has seven carries for 20 yards and one reception for six yards.

Slaton is a former All-American out of West Virginia, where he was also a Heisman Trophy candidate.

Arian Foster Injury Update: Texans RB Practices…

Read More: gary kubiak, nfl injury report, texans injury report, arian foster injury, Arian Foster (RB – HOU), Ben Tate (RB – HOU), Houston Texans

Houston Texans head coach Gary Kubiak informed the press that Arian Foster was fine following a full day’s practice and should be OK heading into Sunday and beyond. Foster’s hamstring has caused him problems through the first three weeks of the season and resulted in his deactivation prior to Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints.

Ben Tate started Sunday’s game against the Saints and rushed 19 times for 82 yards, but appeared to briefly injure his ankle in the third quarter. On Monday, Coach Kubiak stated that he was OK, but there hasn’t been any additional update since then. If he is slowed a bit, it makes the decision to get Foster back into the lineup all the easier.

Foster would have a favorable matchup this Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers. While the Steelers are 2-1, their rush defense has struggled much of the season. The Colts and Ravens both ran wild on Pittsburgh, which bodes well for Foster’s chances if he starts. We’ll keep an eye on injury news the rest of the week, but Foster seems like a good bet to start on Sunday.
