Receiver Andre Johnson could actually put up some good fantasy numbers on Sunday. His Houston Texans go up against the Tennessee Titans in the last game of the regular season and Johnson looks to get in on a number of plays. He missed the last three games due to a strained left hamstring, further compounding his issue with injuries during the 2011 NFL season. For fantasy football owners he became one of the most frustrating players to have this year.

In Week 13 against the Atlanta Falcons, Johnson had 9.7 fantasy points in the 17-10 win. It was only the sixth game that he had played in 2011, but the 4 catches and 97 receiving yards really helped out the Titans. It ended up just becoming a big tease to those that play fantasy football, because he would then miss the next three weeks.

After starting out the season with three good games, it really looked like Johnson was going to put up some of the best numbers of his career. He had 21 catches for 316 yards and 2 touchdowns heading into Week 4, showing that he could threaten the 100-catch 1,600-yard mark for the year. It didn’t go according to plan though, and injuries caused him to miss nine games of the fantasy season. Now he returns in Week 17 during a time when many fantasy leagues have actually already finished.

There are some Texans fans frustrated with the news that Johnson is even returning before the playoffs, simply because a hamstring injury is one of the easiest to worsen on the football field. One bad cut or misstep and Johnson could miss the playoffs, likely taking away one of the best weapons that the Texans have on offense. This is where the risk also comes in for fantasy football owners, because while Johnson has the opportunity to make a big play or two, he might have very limited playing time. If the quarterback(s) can’t get him the ball early, then he may not post very good stats for the day.

Consider Johnson a risk as a fantasy starter in Week 17, though he does have the potential to put up big numbers on the first two drives alone. Starting a receiver that will play a full game in Week 17 is definitely a safer bet at this point, but most league champions know when to play it safe and when to bet on a talented player trying to prove something.

HOUSTON — Houston Texans star receiver Andre Johnson will play against Tennessee on Sunday after missing the past three games because of a strained left hamstring.

Coach Gary Kubiak said Johnson will be on a play count, but wasn’t sure how many. Johnson has played only six games this season after missing six straight with a right hamstring injury that required surgery.

“It was all depending on how the week went and everything went fine this past week, so I’ll be able to go out and play a little bit on Sunday,” Johnson said.

Kubiak said he wants Johnson to play so he’ll be ready to contribute for Houston next weekend in its first playoff game. Johnson also believes getting some work in this week is important.

“I just want to get back in the flow of playing a game,” he said. “It’s been a while since I’ve played. I just want to get back to the game feeling. I think it will show fans that I will be ready to play for the playoffs. So it will give them something to be excited about.”

Johnson is disappointed that he hasn’t been able to play much this season, but after enduring years of losing seasons in Houston, the team’s success this year has kept his attitude positive.

“It’s been a long season with a lot of frustrating times, but there’s still light at the end of the tunnel,” Johnson said.

The AFC South champions have lost two straight heading into Sunday’s game after reeling off seven consecutive wins. While the outcome can’t change their playoff position, they hope to build momentum for the postseason.

“We want to go out and win this game and get back to playing football the way we had when we were on our winning streak,” Johnson said. “We need to come out and eliminate those mistakes that we’ve been having for the past couple of weeks.”

Johnson has finished with more than 1,200 yards receiving the each of the past three seasons, including a career-high 1,575 in 2008. He has 31 receptions for 471 yards and two touchdowns this season while missing the most games in his career.

What do you guys think about this.

HOUSTON — Houston Texans star receiver Andre Johnson will sit out Sunday’s game at Cincinnati with a strained left hamstring.

Johnson hurt himself chasing down a deep pass from rookie T.J. Yates late in the third quarter of last week’s 17-10 win over Atlanta. Johnson didn’t practice all week, and coach Gary Kubiak said Friday that he would keep him out of Sunday’s game.

The Texans (9-3) have won six in a row and can clinch the AFC South with a victory over the Bengals (7-5) and a Tennessee loss to New Orleans.

Johnson was playing his second game after missing six with a right hamstring injury that required minor surgery. Kubiak has said Johnson’s latest hamstring injury was not as serious as the earlier one.

“It’s very disappointing,” Johnson said. “You work your butt off to get back after missing six games and then to have something like this to happen again is very frustrating. But at the same time, the team’s in a great position. I’m just trying to do everything I can to get back, so that I can get back out on the field and play.”

Johnson couldn’t say if he would be ready to play in Houston’s next game — Dec. 18 against Carolina. He worked out in a pool on Thursday and ran on a treadmill Friday.

“I knew I wouldn’t be able to play this week, so that’s pretty much it,” he said. “You definitely would like to be a part of it, be out there playing, but things happen. There’s a reason why these things happen, and that’s just the way I look at it. Something positive will come from it.”

That’s all for today.

HOUSTON (AP)—No matter how many obstacles the Houston Texans face, they
keep finding ways to overcome them.

On Sunday rookie quarterback T.J. Yates(notes) led them to their franchise-record
sixth straight win with a 17-10 victory over the Atlanta Falcons.

Yates threw a touchdown pass in his first NFL start, Arian Foster(notes) rushed for
111 yards and Houston (9-3) kept rolling despite another injury to Andre
Johnson(notes).

“It’s a great win because of everything this team has been through,” coach
Gary Kubiak said. “We found a way to win.”

The Texans’ success is remarkable considering they’re down to their
third-string quarterback and have played many of their games without their star
receiver.

The Falcons (7-5) sputtered offensively most of the game in losing for the
second time in seven games. Houston’s top-ranked defense knocked down two passes
by Matt Ryan(notes) in the end zone in the closing seconds.

“(The win) is big because it proves a lot because of the adversity we went
through,” linebacker Brian Cushing(notes) said. “Coming in here with your No. 3
quarterback against a defense like that and playing an offense like that, I
think it really says a lot about our team.”

Yates went 12 for 25 for 188 yards without an interception, an impressively
poised performance after a dizzying week.

The fifth-round pick was thrust into his pro debut last week in Jacksonville
when Matt Leinart(notes) broke his collarbone. Leinart was starting in place of Matt
Schaub(notes), who broke his right foot in Houston’s previous game.

The 24-year-old Yates went 8 for 15 for 70 yards in his
earlier-than-expected debut against the Jaguars. He was sacked three times by
the Falcons, but never looked overwhelmed.

Yates took a hard hit from John Abraham(notes) early in the third quarter, but
Abraham was disappointed that they weren’t able to disrupt him more.

“It was our fault for not getting him down,” Abraham said. “We got a few
good pressures on him. But there’s a difference between making him move and
making him take hits and getting him on the ground. We didn’t get him on the
ground that much. He did a good job.”

Johnson looked like he’d be Yates’ go-to guy early, making leaping catches
on the quarterback’s first two completions. The All-Pro receiver also atoned for
an earlier drop by pulling in a perfect 50-yard pass from Yates to the Atlanta 5
in the second quarter.

Yates then snapped a quick pass to tight end Joel Dreessen(notes) for his first
career TD, and chants of “T.J.! T.J.!” emerged from the capacity crowd.

“I was studying my butt off all week long,” Yates said, “and it paid
off.”

Naturally, the Texans couldn’t make it through a game without more
adversity.

Johnson left in the third quarter after hurting his left hamstring. He
injured his right hamstring in Week 4, had minor surgery and sat out six games.

Kubiak said after the game that he was told the injury was not severe, but
he couldn’t be certain until Johnson has tests on Monday.

“I know it’s not as bad as the last injury I had, but I’m definitely
worried about it,” Johnson said. “It just didn’t feel right.”

After Johnson went down, Foster took over the offensive load, carrying 10
times on Houston’s decisive drive. Foster scored on a 1-yard run with 6:05 left,
and then it was up to the Texans’ defense to finish.

Atlanta got the ball back with 59 seconds left, and Ryan threw a deep pass
to Julio Jones(notes) to the Texans 25. But Ryan overthrew Roddy White(notes) in one corner of
the end zone and Kareem Jackson(notes) swatted away a pass to Jones in the other corner
as time expired.

“I had the opportunity to make that play and I just had to come up with the
catch at the end,” Jones said.

Ryan completed 20 of 46 passes for 267 yards with two touchdowns, but also
threw two interceptions. The Texans have intercepted a pass in 11 consecutive
games.

“We played in spurts,” Atlanta coach Mike Smith said. “We didn’t do the
things we wanted to accomplish. We had way too many dropped footballs, way too
many things that we normally don’t do.”

After Johnson went down, Foster kept Houston on track, converting a
fourth-and-1 with a 7-yard run to the Atlanta 2. The Texans took more than 10
minutes off the clock with the decisive, 19-play drive, which tied a team
record.

Notes: Sunday was the ninth game this season in which the Texans have held
an opponent under 20 points. … Tony Gonzalez(notes) has a catch in 175 consecutive
games, the league’s longest active streak. The tight end also reached 60
receptions for the 13th consecutive season, an NFL record. … The Texans had a
positive turnover ratio (plus-1) for the eighth time in 12 games. … Houston
has already matched its highest single-season win total (9-7 in 2009).

That’s all for today guys, i’ll be back to blog you tomorrow.

Houston, TX (Sports Network) – A full participant in practice this week, star
Houston Texans wide receiver Andre Johnson is on track to play for the first
time in almost two months.

As expected, Johnson will be in uniform Sunday for Houston’s road game against
Jacksonville.

He has missed six straight games since injuring his hamstring in a Week 4 game
against Pittsburgh.

“It’s been good for the team just to have him back out here,” Texans head
coach Gary Kubiak said Friday. “I can see how hungry he is to get back to
being a part of what’s going on.

“He’s practiced good this week. You all know what Andre means to this team and
for him to be putting the uniform on again on Sunday, he hasn’t done it in a
while, so it will mean a lot to the team.”

The Texans, coming off a bye, lead Tennessee by two games for first place in
the AFC South but will rely on backup quarterback Matt Leinart for the time
being after starter Matt Schaub (foot) went on injured reserve.

Leinart hasn’t started a game since 2009 with the Arizona Cardinals, but
Kubiak said the former USC star has looked “confident” in practice.

“Boy, he practiced clean today,” the coach said. “I just know he’s excited to
play. I’m sure he’ll be going 100 miles an hour. I’ll have to calm him down
and just get him to play a good 3 1/2 hour football game.”

Johnson, who had surgery two days after he was injured, had 25 catches for 352
yards and two touchdowns in the first four games this season and has scored
52 touchdowns with 9,516 receiving yards since 2003.

The Texans have won four games in a row, improving to 4-2 since Johnson went
down.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP)—The streaking Houston Texans are gaining confidence by the victory.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP)—The streaking Houston Texans are gaining confidence by
the victory.

The AFC South leaders pummeled the reeling Tampa Bay Buccaneers 37-9 on
Sunday with Matt Schaub(notes) throwing for two long touchdowns, Arian Foster(notes), Ben Tate(notes)
and Derrick Ward(notes) each running for scores, and the NFL’s No. 1-ranked defense
delivering another strong performance.

“We’re playing well as a team,” Schaub said after the Texans (7-3) won
their fourth straight with star receiver Andre Johnson(notes) sidelined by hamstring
injury, matching a franchise mark set in 2009 to head into their bye week with
their best-ever record through 10 games.

“We have some playmakers on this offense,” the quarterback added.
“Defensively, we’re playing really well. They’re holding teams, making them
turn the ball over. They’re just playing exceptional football.”

Jacoby Jones(notes) filled in for Johnson with an 80-yard TD reception on the first
play from scrimmage and Foster turned a short pass into his second 78-yard
scoring reception of the season for Houston.

A defense that’s made a dramatic turnaround under coordinator Wade Phillips
had four sacks, three interceptions and recovered a fumble.

The Texans lead their division by 1 1-2 games over second-place Tennessee
and may get Johnson, who’s been sidelined six weeks, back when they travel to
Jacksonville in two weeks. After losing two straight without Schaub’s favorite
target, Houston has put together an impressive winning streak by getting
contributions from a lot of different players.

The bye figures to give others a chance to get healthy, too.

“It was important today that we got to this point,” coach Gary Kubiak
said. “We’ve been working really hard. … We had five or six players that
missed a whole week of practice, and they lined up and played. `We’ve got a good
team thing going on right now.”

The Bucs (4-5), on the other hand, have lost three straight and four of five
following a 3-1 start.

Josh Freeman(notes) threw three interceptions and was sacked four times, and Tampa
Bay’s offense didn’t get into the end zone until the fourth quarter for the
second game in a row. Defensively, the Bucs tackled poorly and yielded 268 yards
in the opening half and 420 overall.

“Terrible game. Completely, put the blame on me for this one. … We
started the game just like we finished it,” Tampa Bay coach Raheem Morris said.
“Poor job by myself. I’ll take complete responsibility for that. I refuse to
believe that our guys are that bad, so it has to be my fault.”

Houston, which is ranked No. 1 in total defense for the first time, has
limited opponents to just over 10 points per game during its winning streak.
After limiting the Titans, Jaguars and Browns to fewer than 175 yards the
previous three weeks, the Texans held Tampa Bay to 231.

Foster and Tate each ran for over 100 yards to key last week’s 30-12 victory
over Cleveland. They weren’t as successful running this time, however the Texans
did finish with 185 yards on the ground. Foster gained 84 on 17 carries and Tate
wound up with 63 on 13 carries, including an 11-yard TD burst to make it 37-9
with under six minutes remaining.

“With winning comes a winning mind-set, and believing in each other keeps
that positive energy flowing,” Texans defensive end Antonio Smith said. “I
think everybody is in on it from top to bottom.”

Tampa Bay scored on Connor Barth’s(notes) 55-yard field goal on the final play of
the first half and didn’t get into the end zone until Freeman threw a 9-yard TD
pass to Preston Parker(notes) early in the fourth quarter. Defensive tackle Albert
Haynesworth(notes) made his debut for the Bucs, blocking an extra point after Houston’s
first touchdown and finishing with five tackles.

The two-time Pro Bowl selection was released by New England on Tuesday,
claimed off waivers Wednesday and practiced with his new team for the first time
on Thursday. Gerald McCoy’s(notes) season-ending injury left the Bucs thin on the
offensive line, and with backup Frank Okam(notes) still sidelined by a sore calf, the
350-pound Haynesworth moved into the starting lineup.

A week after rushing for a club-record 261 yards during a 30-12 victory over
Cleveland, the Texans came out throwing on a Bucs defense that has struggled to
stop the run and had to honor Schaub’s play-action fakes. A wide-open Jacoby
Jones caught an underthrown ball at the Tampa Bay 45 on the first play, cut back
to his left between safeties Tanard Jackson(notes) and Sean Jones(notes) and sprinted to the
end zone to finish Houston’s longest scoring play of the season.

Foster’s long TD reception nearly covered as much ground and also involved
some nifty running after the catch. The third-year running back took a short
throw from Schaub, broke a tackle and headed up the left sideline before cutting
inside near midfield to avoid Sean Jones and easily outrun the remaining
pursuit.

Houston’s first three scoring drives covered 80, 80 and 90 yards. Foster had
four receptions for 102 yards, and missed going over 100 yards rushing when he
had a 39-yard gain wiped out by a penalty in the fourth quarter.

Schaub only attempted three passes after halftime, finishing 11 of 15 for
242 yards and no interceptions. One apparent pick at the Tampa Bay goal line was
reversed following a replay review that showed that intended receiver Derrick
Mason(notes) jarred the ball loose from Talib before the Bucs cornerback gained
control. Neil Rackers(notes) kicked a 22-yard field goal on the next play for a 9-0
lead.

Freeman completed 15 of 35 passes for 170 yards. The Texans limited
LeGarrette Blount(notes) to 34 yards rushing on 10 attempts.

“The last three weeks have been tough. We haven’t won in about a month,”
Morris said. “The guys right now are not playing well, and we’ve got to find a
way to get better.”

Notes: Schaub has thrown 10 TD passes and just one interception in five road
games. . … Brian Cushing(notes), Brice McClain and Quintin Demps(notes) had Houston’s
interceptions. … Bucs backup DE George Johnson(notes) injured his knee late in the
first half and did not return.

That’s not too surprising, but what is somewhat unexpected is how well the Texans have been playing offensively despite superstar wide receiver Andre Johnson being shelved with a hamstring injury for the past five weeks. In the four games without Johnson, Houston is averaging 415.6 yards per game (third in AFC) and is second only to the Steelers in offensive touchdowns during that time span. The loss of Johnson has coincided with the healthy return of Arian Foster however. The 2010 rushing leader has 158.6 scrimmage yards per game over Houston’s last four games.

Houston will once again be without Johnson this Sunday, as he was ruled out against the Buccaneers prior to his team going on its bye in Week 11.

HOUSTON – Texans star receiver Andre Johnson will miss his sixth straight game as he continues a longer-than-expected recovery from a right hamstring injury.

Johnson ran on a separate field Friday as the Texans (6-3) prepared for Sunday’s game at Tampa Bay (4-4). Coach Gary Kubiak has been saying for two weeks that Johnson is “very close” to returning, but not quite fully healed.

After Sunday, Houston has its bye before playing at Jacksonville on Nov. 27. Kubiak is optimistic Johnson will be ready by then.

“We should come out of the bye knowing that he’s ready to go, and be a part of our team as we go into those last six weeks,” Kubiak said. “He’s doing really good, but the smart thing to do is give him this extra time to rest and continue to have some guys step up and take his place.”

Johnson said Friday that holding him out for one more game was “probably the best decision.” He sat out practice all this week, and planned to put himself through a hard workout again Monday.

“I still could go out and play football,” Johnson said. “We just felt the best thing was just to wait and go through the off week.”

The five-time Pro Bowl selection was hurt in the second quarter of Houston’s 17-10 win over Pittsburgh on Oct. 2. Johnson said he had a “setback” in a workout early last week that forced him to miss last weekend’s 30-12 victory over Cleveland.

Johnson says he’s progressed beyond the point where he’s worried about aggravating the injury.

“I’m feeling good now, I’m excited about where I’m at,” he said. “Before, when I was running, I always felt that pulling feeling. I haven’t been feeling it. But the crazy thing is, you get so used to feeling something when you’re running, you get to feeling certain things and you’re kind of waiting for it to happen again.

“That’s the point where I’m at right now,” he said. “I think I’ll be over that. I went and ran again (Friday) and I didn’t feel anything.”

The Texans have won three in a row since losing the first two games after Johnson was hurt. Houston has turned to running backs Arian Foster and Ben Tate to carry much of the offensive load, and tight ends Owen Daniels and Joel Dreessen and wideouts Jacoby Jones and Kevin Walter have played well in Johnson’s absence.

“I know a lot of people didn’t think we would be in the position we’re in when I went down, because of things that have happened in the past,” Johnson said. “We have a good team, a lot of weapons and a lot of guys who can make plays.

“Me now, I have to play catch-up,” he said. “I have to come back and pick up the pace and get to the level where they’re playing.”

Johnson is the only Texan who played for the team before Kubiak arrived in 2006. Houston is still seeking its first playoff berth, and Johnson is happy that the team has continued to win this year without him.

“It’s something that I’ve been waiting for for nine seasons,” Johnson said. “It’s finally here. We have a great opportunity. All we can do is take advantage of it.”

The Texans have a bye week before playing at Jacksonville on Nov. 27. Kubiak is optimistic that Johnson will be ready by then.

Houston Texans wide receiver Andre Johnson remains a tough call for head coach Gary Kubiak as he continues to work back from hamstring surgery. Johnson suffered the hamstring injury against the Pittsburgh Steelers in week four and has been sidelined since. He has run four of the last five days, but did not run on Wednesday. Kubiak indicated Johnson will work with trainers on Thursday and be a weekend decision.

The Texans face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday and then have a bye week in week eleven. Given the questionable nature of Johnson’s recovery, it would not be at all surprising to see him sit out week ten to get that extra week during the bye. The Texans could use him back in their offense, but they also hold a game and a half lead in the division with a game in hand against the second place Titans. It makes no sense to risk aggravating the injury if he could be good to go following the bye week.

In the meantime, Kevin Walter remains the best wide receiver option on the Texans, but that’s not exactly a great option. Owen Daniels and Arian Foster have been two of the primary beneficiaries during Johnson’s injury, with the rushing game carrying the load for much of the offense. Walter does not have a ton of upside, but he is a safe play if injuries have you rattled in week ten.

HOUSTON (AP) — Houston Texans coach Gary Kubiak hasn’t ruled out wide receiver Andre Johnson for Sunday’s game against Cleveland after the star wide receiver missed his second straight day of practice Thursday.

Kubiak said Johnson, who is recovering from a hamstring injury, was feeling better but the Texans didn’t feel he was ready to practice. The receiver went through an intense workout Monday that left him sore and caused him to miss the practices. Kubiak expects Johnson to return to practice on Friday.

“I’m not scared to play Andre if he doesn’t practice,” Kubiak said. “He knows what’s going on. This is strictly about his health and how he’s feeling.”

Johnson was injured Oct. 2 against Pittsburgh and had a minor procedure to repair the right hamstring injury early the next week. He has missed four straight games and the Texans dropped the first two without him before winning their last two.

With Johnson out, the Texans have just four healthy receivers on their roster. Jacoby Jones has been starting opposite Kevin Walter while Johnson recovers, and the Texans also have Derrick Mason and Bryant Johnson.

Walter led the group with five receptions for 70 yards in Sunday’s win over Jacksonville, which improved the Texans to 5-3 and 3-0 in the AFC South. Tight end Owen Daniels also pitched in, snagging four passes for 60 yards.

Kubiak has been impressed with their work while Johnson sits on the bench.

“Andre is our big gun. He’s a great player, a tremendous player and when you lose a guy like that for four games in a season it’s very tough,” Kubiak said. “It’s tough on the quarterback, tough on the group, tough on the receivers. I think they’ve all kind of responded in their own way. They’ve all made plays and it’s been a grind for them.”

Running back Arian Foster had just one reception for 12 yards against Jacksonville, but his 299 yards receiving in the last four games have led the team with Johnson out.

“That’s always been a part of what we do,” Kubiak said. “He’s excellent with his hands. He’s a three down player and we’re going to always make sure that people have to worry about him doing that as well as running the ball. It’s just another way of him touching the ball.”

Foster’s receiving yards have been helpful to the team with Johnson out, but it has been his running that has helped them get back on track in the last two games. Foster has 227 yards rushing combined in the last two games. He is the ninth leading rusher in the NFL with 532 yards despite missing two games.
