HOUSTON (AP) — With all eyes on
Cam Newton
, the
Carolina Panthers
turned to a trick play to stretch their big lead in Houston on Sunday.

Newton took the snap, slipped the ball to
Richie Brockel
, and the tight end swung around the left side for a touchdown late in the first half of Carolina’s 28-13 victory that snapped
the Texans’ seven-game winning streak.

Newton also threw two touchdown passes and outplayed opposing rookie quarterback T.J. Yates. The Panthers (5-9) built a 21-0
halftime lead, then ended Houston’s second-half rally when linebacker
James Anderson
intercepted Yates in the end zone midway through the fourth quarter.

But the talk in the Panthers’ locker room after the game swirled around the bold gimmick play from the Texans 7 in the final
minute of the half.

“The offensive coaches have basically been working on different things and things that we can mix with what we do on offense,”
Panthers coach Ron Rivera said. “I’m not sure which one of our guys came up with this one, but the timing of it was perfect.”

Houston’s focus on Newton, the top overall pick, created the opportunity to run the play.

“The defense is so keyed up on him and worried about him making the play,” Brockel said, “they sometimes forget about other
things and their assignments.”

By then, Carolina already had the Texans (10-4) on their heels.

Houston looked emotionally flat after clinching the AFC South last weekend, and its top-ranked defense appeared vulnerable
without coordinator Wade Phillips, who’s on medical leave after undergoing kidney and gall bladder surgery this week.

Linebackers coach Reggie Herring made the defensive calls on Sunday, but the Texans could not generate a turnover in a game
for the first time this season.

“I just think the overall theme of the day was, we gave up big plays and there were discipline parts of the game that we were
not very disciplined on, as we have been throughout the year,” Herring said. “We obviously didn’t execute very well.”

Houston gave up only 316 yards, but Carolina converted two Texans turnovers into 14 points.

      Arian Foster
fumbled on the second snap, and Newton threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to
Steve Smith
less than 3 minutes into the game. It was the third fumble lost by Foster this year, and
Ben Tate
came in for Houston’s second series.

Yates completed his first seven passes, but the Texans struggled to sustain drives against the league’s 24th-ranked defense.

Newton, meanwhile, completed passes at key moments, despite finishing with a season-low total in yards passing.

He shrugged off two early sacks to make pinpoint passes to Smith and
Greg Olsen
for big gains then found
Jeremy Shockey
for a 9-yard touchdown pass with 12:19 left in the half.

Newton has avoided a turnover in three of four games since throwing four interceptions in a loss to Detroit on Nov. 20.

“I think that’s the key to success for the
Carolina Panthers
offensively,” Newton said. “I look at other quarterbacks across the league and when they do a good job of protecting the football
that’s just the key to the win.”

Yates, in his third career start, made his first key mistake after getting Houston across midfield in the second quarter.
Carolina linebacker
Jordan Senn
intercepted his pass to
Kevin Walter
, and Newton calmly guided the Panthers down the field again.

The Texans’ offense looked better in the third quarter, twice advancing into Carolina territory. But Yates threw incomplete
on two third-down plays and Houston only came away with two field goals from
Neil Rackers
.

Houston’s defense stiffened after the break, and Foster got the offense moving again with a weaving, 22-yard run to the Panthers
24. Yates zipped a pass to Walter to the 11, and Foster scored three plays later.

Carolina produced only 23 yards and one first down in the third quarter.

But Newton quieted the revived crowd with a 26-yard pass to Shockey early in the fourth.
DeAngelo Williams
sprinted 24 yards through a gaping hole on the next snap to put Carolina in front 28-13.

Notes: The Panthers have led in 13 of 14 games this season. … Carolina has scored 40 touchdowns this season after scoring
just 16 in 2010. … Newton finished with 149 yards passing, a season low. … Yates completed 19 of 30 passes for 212 yards.
… The Texans allowed more than 20 points at home for the first time since a 25-20 loss to Oakland in Week 5.

While the newly crowned AFC South champion Houston Texans clinched their
first playoff berth last weekend, coach Gary Kubiak’s focus remains on what lies
ahead.

Houston’s immediate future, though, remains a little unsettled with news of
defensive coordinator Wade Phillips’ temporary medical leave of absence.

Hoping to persevere through Phillips’ leave, the Texans look to extend their
franchise-best winning streak to eight games Sunday against the visiting
Carolina Panthers.

Three days after leading Houston’s stifling defense in a thrilling 20-19 win
at Cincinnati, Phillips announced he’d be undergoing surgery on his kidney
Thursday morning. He won’t be on the sidelines against the Panthers (4-9) but
expects to return to the Texans within 10 days.

“The team is we, it’s not me. I’ve been getting too much credit, but it’s a
football team, and they’re going to play,” Phillips told the Texans’ official
website. “I haven’t done a good job if they’re not ready to play.”

In his first year with the Texans, Phillips has helped turn their defense
into one of the NFL’s best. Houston, which last season finished 30th in the
league with 376.9 yards allowed per game, is surrendering a league-low average
of 274.9. The Texans are also giving up 16.0 points per game – 10.7 less than in
2010.

Linebackers coach Reggie Herring will take over as interim defensive
coordinator.

“I feel very confident about this,” Herring said. “The players are all in a
good frame of mind right now. We have a lot of things to finish, home-field
advantage and we’re number one in the (AFC) right now. We have a lot to play
for. Players have shown a lot of character and pride. I don’t see any letdown in
these guys.”

While Houston had plenty to celebrate last weekend, it’s one of four 10-3
teams in the conference vying for home-field advantage.

“They’ve got to keep going … they understand what’s ahead of them,” Kubiak
said.

“We don’t have many guys on our team that have been in playoff games. You
probably could count on 10 fingers. I don’t know how many we have, but the few
that we do have need to keep our guys focused on what it’s all about.”

The Texans held a seventh consecutive opponent to under 20 points in Week
14, but it was rookie quarterback T.J. Yates who was instrumental in the win.

The fifth-round pick out of North Carolina threw for 300 yards and two
touchdowns – including a game-winning six-yard TD to wideout Kevin Walter with
two seconds remaining. The Texans won the division with a Tennessee loss to New
Orleans later that day.

“It’s pretty crazy,” said Yates, thrown under center with Matt Schaub and
Matt Leinart out for the season. “A lot of people in this organization have
waited a long time for this. This is a special day for this team and this
organization.”

In addition to Schaub and Leinart being out, star linebacker Mario Williams
(torn pectoral) was placed on injured reserve in October. All-Pro wideout Andre
Johnson, who missed six games with a right hamstring issue earlier in the year,
will miss his second straight contest due to a strained left hamstring.

Starting right guard Mike Brisiel became the latest Texan to go down,
suffering a leg fracture against the Bengals. He is expected to miss at least
three weeks.

After winning back-to-back games for the first time, Carolina let what
seemed like a third consecutive victory slip away last Sunday. The Panthers took
a 23-7 lead into the break but were outscored 24-0 in the second half, falling
31-23 to Atlanta.

Carolina has found itself with a lead in nearly every game but hasn’t been
able to capitalize.

“When you lead 12 out of 13, you have a chance to win games. We’re a lot
better than we’re giving ourselves an opportunity for,” coach Ron Rivera told
the team’s official website. “We’ve got to grow up and get past a lot of things.
We’ve got to get past, ‘It is what it is,’ because it’s not. We are better than
that, and we have to start playing like that. We have to start growing up.”

Rookie sensation Cam Newton completed just 19 of 39 passes for 276 yards and
two TDs. He was also picked off twice, bringing his total to 16 – tied for
third-most in the league.

Much of the Panthers’ struggles can be directly attributed to their
inability to take care of the football. Carolina has committed 20 turnovers in
its losses and one in its wins.

Houston has taken both meetings with Carolina, winning 34-21 on the road in
the last matchup Sept. 16, 2007.

That’s all for today guys, i’ll be back to blog you tomorrow.

HOUSTON – The setbacks finally seemed to catch up to the Houston Texans in Cincinnati last week.

It had all been going remarkably well — while one key player after another went down with a major injury, Houston somehow continued to win.

At last, the Texans had run into a team good enough to beat them, and the Bengals had them down 16-3 at halftime, and 19-13 with just over two minutes left.

But not even that was too much for depleted Houston to overcome.

Rookie quarterback T.J. Yates, a fifth-round pick, calmly guided the Texans on an 80-yard touchdown drive that ended up lifting the young franchise to its first AFC South title and first playoff berth.

Houston (10-3) has won seven in a row going into Sunday’s game against Carolina (4-9), and with the franchise’s first post-season berth secured, the expansion team with the mostly dismal history is taking aim at the Super Bowl.

And the way this season is unfolding, who’s to say the Texans can’t get there?

“The division was one of our goals, but not our main goal,” running back Arian Foster said, “and there’s a lot more at stake out there for us to go grab. It’s an opportunity that doesn’t come along a lot in the NFL, so you have to take advantage of it, and that’s what we’re working towards doing.”

Of course, the Texans are dealing with more obstacles this week.

Star receiver Andre Johnson is likely to sit out for the second straight week with a strained left hamstring, and defensive co-ordinator Wade Phillips is taking a medical leave following kidney surgery. Phillips expects to miss a week to 10 days, and linebackers coach Reggie Herring will run the league’s top-ranked defence.

Phillips has orchestrated a dramatic turnaround, transforming a defence that ranked 30th last season (377 yards per game) to No. 1 this year (275 yard per game). The 102-yard improvement would be the best in NFL history, and coach Gary Kubiak expects nothing to change in Phillips’ absence.

“Our guys, they’ve showed such maturity all year long, through adversity and any issues,” Kubiak said. “They understand the situation, and also want Wade to be sitting there watching them play Sunday and make him proud.

“I watch guys continue to find a little bit more in themselves, week in and week out,” he said. “That’s what our team is all about.”

The Texans have held their last seven opponents below 20 points, but doing that against rookie quarterback Cam Newton this week will be a major task.

With Newton at the helm, the Panthers have made nearly as drastic a reversal on offence as Houston has on defence. Carolina ranks fifth in total offence (399 yards per game) after ranking last in 2010 (258.4 yards per game).

“It does start with the quarterback,” first-year coach Ron Rivera said. “Quite frankly, that position has really been solidified with Cam, as he’s developing and learning the system.”

Newton needs 167 yards passing to top Peyton Manning’s rookie record, set in 1998 (3,739 yards). The top overall pick in last year’s draft, Newton already set a rookie mark with 432 yards passing in a 30-23 loss to Green Bay in Week 2, and his 13 rushing touchdowns are a single-season record for a quarterback.

“The young man’s everything we hoped he would be,” Rivera said.

The hardest part for Kubiak this week may have been trying to simulate Carolina’s offence in practice. Not only do the Panthers run what Kubiak calls an “unconventional” offence, the Texans have no one who can adequately mimic what Newton does.

“I said, ‘Hey guys, I’d love to tell you we can give you a good look in practice of what you’re going to face this week, but we can’t,’” Kubiak said. “We’re going to do our best. You’ve got to respect what he is, as an athlete and what he can do to you. It’s a different challenge because of what they do and all his ability.”

On top of that, Newton gets to work with one of the league’s top receivers.

Steve Smith leads the NFC and ranks second overall in yards receiving (1,217) and became the 35th player to reach 10,000 career yards receiving in last week’s loss to Atlanta. He needs 10 catches to become Carolina’s career leader, passing Muhsin Muhammad (696).

Smith should match up with top Houston cornerback Johnathan Joseph, who has four interceptions. Joseph remembers three previous encounters with Smith during his five-year stint in Cincinnati.

“He hasn’t changed anything,” Joseph said. “He’s just a guy that goes up and competes on each and every play. In this league, that’s all you can ask for from the guy you’re opposing, a guy that’s going to compete, whether it’s a jump ball or a hitch.

“He can take it 80 or 90 yards, that’s just what he’s about, competing from the beginning to the end of a ballgame.”

That’s all for today guys, i’ll be back to blog you tomorrow.

Wade Phillips, who’s turned the Houston defense into the NFL’s best, will have surgery this week to resolve a kidney condition and will be away from the team for a week to 10 days.

The 64-year-old Phillips disclosed the medical issue after working with the team at practice on Wednesday. He would not specify the condition, but said it is not life-threatening, is not cancer, and that doctors recommended that he have the procedure.

“I feel good,” Phillips said. “I don’t have any physical problems right now, so if I get this done, this procedure that I’m doing, then I’ll be fine.”

Linebackers coach Reggie Herring will run the defense for Houston (10-3) in Sunday’s game against Carolina (4-9). Herring was Phillips’ linebackers coach in Dallas from 2008-10, then joined Houston’s staff after Phillips was hired last January.

“He’s ready to do it,” Houston coach Gary Kubiak said. “Reggie’s called defenses before. We got a lot of confidence. We just need to keep going.”

The Texans play at Indianapolis on Dec. 22, and Phillips is hoping to return in time for the regular-season finale against Tennessee on Jan. 1. In the meantime, Herring won’t change anything.

“At the end of the day I’m not Wade Phillips,” Herring said, “but it’s Wade Phillips’ system. It’s our calls. It’s what the players know.”

Phillips’ leave is just the latest roadblock for the Texans.

Outside linebacker Mario Williams (torn chest muscle) and quarterbacks Matt Schaub (right foot injury) and Matt Leinart (broken left collarbone) are all out for the season, and star receiver Andre Johnson has a strained left hamstring after missing six games with an injury to his right hamstring.

Starting right guard Mike Brisiel had surgery on his broken right leg on Monday, and Johnson only jogged during Wednesday’s practice.

Somehow, the Texans have managed to win a franchise-record seven straight games and clinch the AFC South for the team’s first postseason berth.

Still, the latest helping of bad luck has everyone in the locker room shaking their heads in disbelief.

“The ‘next man up’ theme is hitting us everywhere,” said two-time Pro Bowl linebacker DeMeco Ryans.

And Phillips has probably made as a big an impact as anyone the Texans acquired this offseason.

Fired as the coach of the Dallas Cowboys in the middle of last season, Phillips talked earlier this season about feeling rejuvenated in Houston, where he played in college and began his coaching career. He took over the league’s 30th-ranked 2010 defense, implemented a 3-4 alignment, moved Williams to outside linebacker and the transformation was swift.

Houston now leads the league in total defense at 275 yards per game, ranks fourth in rushing defense at 91.5 yards per game and third in pass defense at 183.5 yards per game. The Texans have held each of their last seven opponents below 20 points.

Wade Phillips, the veteran coach who has turned the Houston defence into the NFL’s best, is taking medical leave to have surgery to address a kidney condition this week.

The Texans said Wednesday that the 64-year-old Phillips is expected to return this season, which will include the expansion team’s first playoff game. But his leave is just the latest roadblock for the Texans, who’ve continued to win despite losing a key player to an injury every week.

Linebackers coach Reggie Herring will run the defence for Houston (10-3) in Sunday’s game against Carolina (4-9). Herring was Phillips’ linebackers coach in Dallas from 2008-10, then joined Houston’s staff after Phillips was hired on Jan. 5.

Phillips was expected to speak to reporters after Wednesday’s practice.

On Monday, coach Gary Kubiak said starting right guard Mike Brisiel had surgery on his broken right leg.

But Phillips has probably contributed more to the Texans’ success this season than anyone.

Fired as the coach of the Dallas Cowboys in the middle of last season, Phillips has talked about feeling rejuvenated with the Texans. He took over the league’s worst 2010 defence and implemented a 3-4 alignment before the season.

Houston leads the league in total defense at 275 yards per game. The Texans rank fourth in rushing defense at 91.5 yards per game and third in pass defense at 183.5 yards per game, and have held each of their last seven opponents below 20 points.

The players credit Phillips with not only restoring confidence to the defence, but also creating a scheme that is fun to play.

“We’re playing good defence all over,” two-time Pro Bowl linebacker DeMeco Ryans said recently. “Of course it feels good, to be able to get out there and stop some people. You’re definitely not worried about people scoring on you because you know everybody is being accountable. Everybody’s holding up their end and knowing what they’re supposed to do, so you’re comfortable when you’re out there.”

Under Phillips’ guidance, several Texans are having career years.

Linebacker Brian Cushing has regained his form from 2009, when he was named the Associated Press Defensive Rookie of the Year. He leads the Texans with 86 tackles, and also has two interceptions and three sacks.

Outside linebacker Connor Barwin leads the team with 9 ½ sacks after moving into Williams’ role, and the same position where DeMarcus Ware excelled under Phillips in Dallas. Barwin, a converted defensive end, has 25 quarterback hits and seven pass break-ups. He had a franchise-record four sacks in Houston’s 20-13 win at Jacksonville on Nov. 27.

Rookie defensive end J.J. Watt has 4 ½ sacks and two fumble recoveries and leads the defensive line with 43 tackles, and rookie linebacker Brooks Reed, pressed into action after Williams was hurt, has already set a franchise record for a first-year player with six sacks.

Phillips has clearly found a new home in Houston under coach Gary Kubiak. He ran the defense in Denver from 1989-92, overlapping Kubiak’s playing career as John Elway’s backup for the Broncos, but their history goes back even further.

Phillips and Kubiak first met in the late 1970s, when Kubiak was a ball boy and Wade was an assistant for the Houston Oilers, who were coached by Wade’s father, Bum.

HOUSTON (AP) — The injury-riddled Houston Texans added to their quarterback depth Tuesday, reaching a deal with Jake Delhomme.

Delhomme worked out with the Texans on Tuesday, along with another retired quarterback, Jeff Garcia. The 36-year-old Delhomme will back up rookie T.J. Yates, a fifth-round pick slated to start Sunday’s game against Atlanta.

Rick Smith, Delhomme’s agent, said in a phone interview Tuesday that his client has been staying in shape and raising racehorses in Louisiana since he was cut by Cleveland in July.

“He relishes that role, and he’s looking forward to contributing to the team,” Smith said in a phone interview. “He keeps himself in shape, he’s been throwing a bunch.”

The Texans are dangerously thin at the position in the wake of season-ending injuries to Matt Schaub and Matt Leinart.

Houston signed Kellen Clemens last week after learning that Schaub will need season-ending surgery on his right foot. Leinart broke his left collarbone in Sunday’s 20-13 win over Jacksonville.

Yates replaced Leinart late in the first half, and went 8 for 15 for 70 yards in his first NFL action. Coach Gary Kubiak confirmed Monday that Leinart was out for the year and said Yates would start against the Falcons.

Smith didn’t know if Delhomme would be No. 2 or No. 3 on the depth chart this week. But Smith said Delhomme would only consider playing for a handful of teams if he ever came back, and Houston was one of them.

“Gary runs a very quarterback-friendly system,” said Smith, who also represents former Texans quarterback Sage Rosenfels. “It’s a great offensive system, and quarterbacks, they love it.”

Delhomme guided Carolina to the Super Bowl after the 2003 season – played at Reliant Stadium. He completed 16 of 33 passes for 323 yards and three touchdowns in the Panthers’ 32-29 loss to Tom Brady and New England.

Houston plays the Panthers at Reliant on Dec. 18.

Cleveland signed Delhomme to a two-year contract in March 2010, but he sprained his right ankle in the opener, lost his starting job to rookie Colt McCoy and played in only five games. He threw only two touchdown passes with seven interceptions that season.

But the Texans could hardly afford to be picky.

With Yates thrust into a starting role, Houston will have to lean on its top-ranked defense and No. 3 rushing attack to navigate through the final five games and earn the franchise’s first playoff berth.

Despite losing a key player seemingly every week, the Texans are having their best season. They’ve won five in a row and hold a two-game lead over Tennessee in the AFC South.

“They’ve got a lot of people telling them they can’t do something,” Kubiak said of his team Monday. “Believe me, they believe they can. It’s been about the team all year long and it will continue to be that way. It’s just another obstacle. We’ll rally and get ready to go this week.”

The Texans rank second in pass defense (175.8 yards per game) and fourth against the run (92.5 yards per game). They have 35 sacks, second in the league to Baltimore, and they’re plus-11 in turnover ratio.

Arian Foster and Ben Tate were bottled up against Jacksonville, but both still rank among the league’s top 16 rushers.

HOUSTON – The injury-riddled Houston Texans added to their quarterback depth Tuesday, reaching a deal with Jake Delhomme.

Delhomme worked out with the Texans on Tuesday, along with another retired quarterback, former CFLer Jeff Garcia.

Yates replaced Leinart late in the first half, and went 8-for-15 for 70 yards in his first NFL action.

Delhomme guided Carolina to the Super Bowl after the 2003 season — played at Reliant Stadium. He completed 16-of-33 passes for 323 yards and three touchdowns in the Panthers’ 32-29 loss to Tom Brady and New England.

With Yates thrust into a starting role, Houston will have to lean on its top-ranked defence and No.

The Texans rank second in pass defence (175.8 yards per game) and fourth against the run (92.5 yards per game). They have 35 sacks, second in the league to Baltimore, and they’re plus-11 in turnover ratio.

Arian Foster and Ben Tate were bottled up against Jacksonville, but both still rank among the league’s top 16 rushers.

HOUSTON – Texans coach Gary Kubiak woke up Wednesday to the bad news he knew was probably inevitable.

Doctors told quarterback Matt Schaub that he’ll need season-ending surgery to repair a Lisfranc injury in his right foot, and Houston put Schaub on injured reserve and signed Kellen Clemens.

Kubiak was hoping Schaub might still return this season after he was hurt in Houston’s 37-9 win over Tampa Bay on Nov. 13. But Schaub met with several doctors and talked to Kubiak early Wednesday about the disappointing diagnosis.

“Well, that there’s no way that any rest would allow him the opportunity to go play. It was just too risky,” Kubiak said. “It’s something he needs to get fixed for his future, so that’s what we got to go do. We’ve got to go do what’s best for him.”

Matt Leinart will start for Houston (7-3) at Jacksonville (3-7) on Sunday. Rookie T.J. Yates, a fifth-round pick, will be the backup, and Clemens will take the No. 3 spot on the depth chart.

Schaub was averaging only 29 pass attempts per game, but had completed 61 per cent of his throws this season. His 96.8 rating ranks sixth, and his 15 touchdown passes rank ninth.

The Texans haven’t needed Schaub to put up big numbers like he did last year, because running backs Arian Foster and Ben Tate have both played well and helped Houston rank second in rushing (158 yards per game).

“It’s not his fault we weren’t throwing it that much,” Kubiak said, “but when we threw it, he was throwing it as good as anybody and he made probably as many big plays as anybody in the league.

“Everything he was doing,” Kubiak said, “he was a better play this year than he’d been for me the previous four years. I think Matt’s going to have a great career.”

Now, it’s up to Leinart to help Houston earn its first playoff berth in franchise history. The Texans have a two-game lead in the AFC South with six to play.

Kubiak said Schaub will be back at practice on Thursday to assist in getting the other quarterbacks ready, and Leinart says Schaub will be on the sideline Sunday to help him.

“I’m going to pick up where he (Schaub) left off and get us into good situations and do what he was doing,” Leinart said. “I know he’s going to be there every day supporting me. I’m sure I’ll turn to him for a bunch of things.

“We all know he’ll do everything to get back as soon as he can,” Leinart said. “But he’s going to be here, helping big-time.”

Leinart has started only one game since 2007, when he played for Arizona. Clemens tried out for the Texans on Monday, along with Jeff Garcia, Trent Edwards, Brodie Croyle and Chase Clement.

Clemens had an edge because he was in training camp with Washington and coach Mike Shanahan, Kubiak’s former mentor. The Redskins’ offensive co-ordinator is Kyle Shanahan, Mike’s son, who was Kubiak’s offensive co-ordinator with the Texans from 2008-09.

Since he was cut by the Redskins on Sept. 3, Clemens has mostly been working out in his home state of Washington, waiting for an opportunity to re-enter the league.

“The offence, there’s some carryover,” said Clemens. “It’s been as easy a transition as it could be in one day. I’ve only been official for a few hours.”

Meanwhile, star receiver Andre Johnson and safety Danieal Manning were back for the team’s first full practice following the bye week after both missed several games with injuries.

Johnson has been out since hurting his right hamstring in the Texans’ 17-10 win over Pittsburgh on Oct. 2, an injury that required minor surgery to repair. Manning has made a quicker-than-expected recovery after breaking his left fibula in Houston’s 41-7 win over Tennessee on Oct. 23.

Kubiak expects Johnson and Manning to both play in Jacksonville.

Schaub is the 10th Texans player to go on injured reserve this season, joining a group that includes outside linebacker Mario Williams (torn chest muscle) and linebacker Darryl Sharpton (dislocated shoulder).

Schaub’s durability was questioned after he missed games in the 2007 and ’08 seasons with various injuries. But the quarterback started all 16 games for Houston in 2009 and 2010.

Clemens was a second-round pick by the New York Jets in the 2006 draft and backed up Chad Pennington. Clemens started only nine games for the Jets, eight in the 2007 season when the team finished 4-12.

He was eventually demoted to No. 3 on the depth chart after Rex Ryan became the coach, and the team drafted Mark Sanchez in 2009. Clemens became a free agent after the 2010 season, signed with Washington before training camp began.

Gotta run!.

HOUSTON – Even now, in the best of times, the Houston Texans can’t escape their star-crossed history.

The Texans (7-3) are off to the fastest start in franchise history and enter their bye week on a four-game winning streak. They’ve taken control of the AFC South and share the top record in the conference with Pittsburgh, whom they defeated on Oct. 2.

And somehow they’ve done it as their best players continue to go down with major injuries.

The latest is quarterback Matt Schaub, who may be lost for the season after injuring a Lisfranc joint in his right foot during Sunday’s 37-9 win over Tampa Bay. Schaub has started all but 10 games since the start of the 2007 season, but Matt Leinart will replace him for the Texans’ next game, in Jacksonville on Nov. 27.

Houston has already survived more than a month without All-Pro Mario Williams (torn chest muscle) and has won four of the last six games without All-Pro receiver Andre Johnson (right hamstring), who’s expected to return after the bye. Running backs Arian Foster and Ben Tate have also missed games, and starting safety Danieal Manning is still out with a broken left fibula.

It’s always something with the Texans, whose 10-season life span is more defined by epic collapses than milestone victories. The players insist this year feels different, with upgrades in depth, talent and coaching creating confidence and unity in the locker room.

But they also can’t help but wonder why this franchise can’t ever catch a break.

“Over the years, it’s been crazy,” said tight end Owen Daniels, drafted by Houston in 2006. “That’s just the way it’s going to be with the Texans. We’re going to have to fight through stuff, we’re going to have some crazy adversity that other teams might not have.

“That’s what’s going to make this group so special,” Daniels said. “We’re going to be able to fight through that, and find a way to get it done, even though certain things have happened.”

The mindset began to change when Houston scuttled its defensive staff after last season and hired Wade Phillips, renowned for quickly turning around bad defenses.

And, boy, did the Texans need a change after ranking 30th overall and dead-last against the pass in 2010. Phillips not only sold coach Gary Kubiak and owner Bob McNair on a switch to a 3-4 alignment, he also suggested moving 6-foot-6 Williams from defensive end to outside linebacker and morphing into a DeMarcus Ware-type pass rusher.

The Texans focused on high-energy defensive players in the draft, picked up Johnathan Joseph and Manning in free agency to shore up the secondary and the pieces were suddenly in place.

Kubiak can hardly believe how well it’s turned out.

Houston has the league’s No. 1 defense (269.7 yards per game) and more amazingly, ranks second against the pass (178 yards per game). The Texans have generated 20 takeaways (14 interceptions, six recovered fumbles) and are plus-11 in turnover margin.

And even without Williams, who’s been out since Week 5, the Texans rank second in sacks (28). Rookie Brooks Reed has capably filled Williams’ role, outside linebacker Connor Barwin and defensive end Antonio Smith have 4 ½ sacks each, and linebacker Brian Cushing has recaptured his playmaking form from 2009, when he was named the league’s top defensive rookie.

“It’s just been fun to watch,” Kubiak said. “The players have just bought into what we’re doing and they’re playing with a lot of confidence right now and a lot of young players stepping to the plate. Hopefully there’s a lot more good things to come, but right now, it’s very exciting to watch.”

The Texans can also boast the league’s top rushing tandem, Foster and Tate. Both rank among the league’s top 10, and Houston is third in rushing (158 yards per game), behind Philadelphia and Denver.

Between the defense and the running game, the players think they’re equipped to withstand the loss of any one player. Even their starting quarterback.

“Everything happens for a reason,” receiver Kevin Walter said. “It seems like it’s been one thing after another with this team, this year, but we’ve overcome it. We have to do good job and overcome this with Matt, too.

“I feel bad for Schaub, he was having a heck of a year,” he said. “But I know Leinart, and I know he’s excited for the opportunity to come and keep this thing rolling. We’re going to ride him on in, and we’re going to continue to make plays and do our thing.”

Leinart seems to be one of the first who felt a good vibe for this season. He was a free agent in the offseason, but turned down other offers to come back, knowing that he would still be backing up Schaub.

The start of his NFL career derailed in Arizona, and Leinart wasn’t shy during training camp about his desire to earn another starting role. Now he’s in control of a franchise that’s never won anything, but also never felt more optimistic about its future.

“I think it’s easy to let the situation itself overpower you,” Leinart said. “But for me, that’s why we play this game and that’s why we get paid what we get paid. That’s why we grind it out every day during the season and training camp is for things like this.

“It’s exciting,” he said. “This organization, we haven’t been in this situation before, but we’ve got a great team, we’ve got a great team camaraderie. Everyone is so together in belief of what we can accomplish. We just continue to march forward together.”

For two seasons, the Houston Texans have been the NFL's hottest tease.

For two seasons, the Houston Texans have been the NFL’s
hottest tease.

Twice hyped out of training camp as a legitimate up-and-comer, head coach Gary
Kubiak’s team has broken from the gate fast to prolong the prognosticator’s
zeal before, only to stumble badly in the second half en route to maddening
also-ran status.

But this year, thanks to a perfect storm of divisional mediocrity behind them,
it appears the Texans are finally ready to crack the playoff code.

Owners of a 1 1/2-game lead over second-place Tennessee in the AFC South and
already 3-0 against fellow division inhabitants this season, Houston enters its
final pre-bye test against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Sunday at Raymond James
Stadium feeling deservedly good about itself — albeit with just the right
amount of caution.

“We’re sitting where we want to be, first in the division, 6-3,” Kubiak said.
“But as everyone knows, things can go downhill fast in this league, so we have
to remain focused. We’re controlling the football and the clock, so we’re doing
a good job of keeping [opponents] off the field. They’re only going to get
tougher as we move forward.

“We’ve got enough guys around here that have been through enough tough times to
know how hard they’ve worked for this opportunity that they’re fixing to go
into here over the course of the next seven weeks.”

Previously a pass-happy outfit with the tandem of quarterback Matt Schaub and
wide receiver Andre Johnson, the Texans have taken giant leaps toward changing
their identity in 2011, boasting the league’s second-ranked rushing offense and
a defense that’s allowed the fewest total yards en route to the best record
after nine games in franchise history.

Armed with running backs Arian Foster (656 rushing yards) and Ben Tate (623),
the Texans average 155.1 yards per game on the ground, while the defense
surrenders 274 yards and 17.4 points per game.

“I tell you guys [the media] all the time, [the goal] is hopefully get a team
that’s good enough when you show up on Sunday that you can win three different
ways,” Kubiak said. “Right now, I think we’re heading very much towards that. I
think we feel like we can play defense with anybody in the league and we feel
like we can move the ball with anybody in the league.”

Houston won its third straight by routing Cleveland, 30-12, last week with 124
rushing yards from Foster and 115 more from Tate, establishing a franchise-
record 261 rushing yards in the process. Foster has rushed for at least 112
yards in three straight games and gone over 100 from scrimmage in his last six
contests, the longest streak in the league.

The Texans are 4-0 when giving up fewer than 90 rushing yards. They allowed
just 44 to the Browns.

Tampa Bay, meanwhile, is 0-4 when gaining fewer than 100 yards on the ground.
Buccaneers running back LeGarrette Blount has averaged 100 rushing yards and
5.6 yards per carry over his last six home games, but the team has only eight
touchdowns in 22 red-zone opportunities this season.

The Bucs trail New Orleans by 1 1/2 games in the NFC South after dropping a
27-16 decision to the Saints last Sunday.

“It’s hard to win in this division when you’re not scoring touchdowns,” Tampa
Bay quarterback Josh Freeman said. “It’s just taking advantage of the
opportunities. Everything in the red zone is more condensed. It’s got to happen
faster and we just haven’t been making plays.”

Defensively, Tampa Bay made a big move on Wednesday, claiming lineman Albert
Haynesworth off waivers a day after he was released by New England. The
Buccaneers lost defensive tackle Gerald McCoy for the season with a torn right
biceps he sustained in last week’s defeat.

Johnson has missed Houston’s last five games with a right hamstring injury and
is questionable to return for Sunday’s contest.

SERIES HISTORY

The Buccaneers and Texans have split two previous regular-season meetings, with
Tampa Bay recording a 16-3 victory in Houston’s only prior visit to Raymond
James Stadium back in 2003. The Texans topped the Bucs by a 28-14 count in
Houston during the 2007 campaign.

Houston’s above-mentioned win in 2007 gave Kubiak a 1-0 lifetime record against
Tampa Bay as a head coach, while the Buccaneers’ Raheem Morris will be taking
on both the Texans and Kubiak for the first time as a sideline boss.

WHEN THE TEXANS HAVE THE BALL

In four road games in 2011, Schaub has completed 82-of-128 passes (64.1
percent) for 1,119 yards and eight touchdowns with just one interception for a
109.5 rating. He also needs just four touchdown passes to reach 100 for his
career. The Texans had a club-record 261 rushing yards last week and Foster
seeks a fourth consecutive game with 100-plus yards on the ground (115, 112,
124). The standout running back also surpassed Domanick Williams (23
touchdowns) for the most rushing touchdowns in Texans history last week, and is
averaging 106 rushing yards and scored seven touchdowns in his past six
November games. Foster (656 rushing yards) and Tate (623 rushing yards) are the
first running back duo to have 600-plus rushing yards apiece through a team’s
first nine games of a season since Denver’s Mike Anderson and Tatum Bell in
2005. Johnson needs two receptions to reach 700 in the second-fewest games
(120) in NFL history behind only Marvin Harrison (114), but may be held out
another week with Houston having an upcoming bye.

For the Tampa Bay defense, cornerback Ronde Barber has started 191 consecutive
games, the most by a corner in league history. He is also the only player in
NFL history with 25-plus sacks (27) and 40-plus interceptions (42). Defensive
end Adrian Clayborn is tied for second among NFC rookies with three sacks,
while safety Tanard Jackson aims for a third home game in a row with an
interception and rookie middle linebacker Mason Foster has 41 tackles, two
sacks and a forced fumble.

Statistically, the Texans’ offense is sixth in scoring (26.2 ppg), eighth in
total yards (393.6 ypg), 14th in passing yards (238.4 ypg) and second in
rushing (155.1 ypg). On defense, the Buccaneers are lowly in all four
categories, placing 24th in points allowed (24.5 ppg), 29th in total yards
allowed (398.9 ypg), 28th in pass defense (266.5 ypg) and 26th against the run
(132.4 ypg).

WHEN THE BUCCANEERS HAVE THE BALL

Freeman aims for a fourth consecutive win at Raymond James Stadium. Last week,
he completed 27-of-37 passes (73 percent) for 281 yards and a touchdown and a
103.5 rating. When Blount has 18 or more carries, the Buccaneers are 7-1, and
in those eight games he has rushed for 834 yards (104.3 per game) and five
touchdowns. In his past six home games with 15 or more carries, Blount has 676
yards (112.7 per game) and four touchdowns. Wide receiver Mike Williams
averages 4.9 catches per home game in his career (13 games, 64 catches), while
tight end Kellen Winslow had a touchdown last week and has a catch in 84
straight games. He has 10 or more catches in two of three career games against
Houston as well, compiling 21 receptions for 200 yards and a touchdown over
those two contests. Wide receiver Dezmon Briscoe aims for a fourth game in a
row with a 20-plus yard catch this week.

Houston rookie linebacker Brooks Reed had a career-best two sacks last week and
aims for a fourth consecutive game with a sack. Eighth-year end Antonio Smith
has 16 tackles, 4 1/2 sacks and a forced fumble on the season, while free
safety Danieal Manning has 32 tackles and two interceptions in his first season
with Houston. The free-agent acquisition won’t play this week due to a
fractured tibia, however.

By the numbers, Tampa Bay is 24th in scoring offense (18.4 ppg), 15th in total
yards (343.5 ypg), 11th in passing yards (245.4 ypg) and 24th in rushing yards
(98.1 ypg). Houston’s defense is third in points allowed (17.4 ppg), first in
total yards allowed (274.0 ypg), second against the pass (182.6 ypg) and fourth
against the run (91.4 ypg).

KEYS TO THE GAME

Unfortunately for the Bucs, it seems their main weaknesses — running the ball
and scoring points — play right into the hands of a top-four team in both of
those categories league-wide.

With Johnson either unavailable or not at 100 percent, the Texans will lean
even harder on the two-headed running monster of Foster and Tate, who’ve taken
the pressure off a happy-to-oblige Schaub. The Buccaneers are going to have to
keep the pair in check to have a chance this week.

As mentioned earlier, it’s another litmus test — a game on the road against a
credible foe — for a Houston team that’s a would-be playoff contender and has
never really won a status-clinching late-season game. The Texans still need to
show they’re up to the task.

OVERALL ANALYSIS

The Bucs have a way of winning these kinds of games. Get them at home and match
them with an opponent seemingly content to play down a level or two, and it’s
often spelled an unlikely victory for opponents of Tampa Bay in the past.
However, if you’re a believer in the Texans’ renaissance, you have to believe
they’ll find a way here over a foe that’s superior in no other way but home
turf.

Nov 10, 2011 – The Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-4) visit the AFC South-leading Houston Texans (6-3) this Sunday, Nov. 13 in a matchup of two teams headed in opposite directions. The Bucs have lost their last two games to dip to the .500 mark, while the Texans are on the upswing, winning each of their last three by an average of nearly three touchdowns.

Houston presents a big challenge for the Bucs, as it owns the league’s No. 3 defense and No. 6 offense; the Bucs rank No. 23 and No. 24 in those categories, respectively. Quarterback Matt Schaub leads an efficient passing game (13 touchdowns, just six interceptions in 277 attempts), but Arian Foster is the lynchpin: the three-year veteran ranks No. 3 in the league in touches, with 154 carries and 27 receptions. Containing him must be Tampa Bay’s top priority.

In their last outing, the Buccaneers fell to the New Orleans Saints, 27-16, just three weeks after upsetting New Orleans and taking the NFC South lead in what’s clearly been the zenith of their season. The Bucs allowed 453 yards of total offense to New Orleans.

Houston won its last outing, 30-12, against the Cleveland Browns despite a pedestrian effort (14-of-23, 119 yards no touchdowns, one interception) from Schaub. Foster and Ben Tate combined for 31 carries, 239 yards, and two touchdowns as the Texans ran roughshod over the Browns’ defense.

The Bucs and Texans have squared off just twice before, with each game winning on its home field. Most recently, in 2007, Houston prevailed by a 28-14 final, but the teams looked completely different then: Luke McCown was under center for the Buccaneers, while Sage Rosenfels quarterbacked the Texans.
